I'm totally bummed today. I was supposed to be climbing the STUPID mountain this morning. Instead, a typhoon is coming and is scheduled to hit (they say!) on Friday. It will probably go wide of Taiwan, but they aren't taking chances. They cancelled my permit, so I can't climb even if I wanted to.
So . . . I took the train back to Teipei, since I didn't want to be stuck in a hotel in bad weather in Chaiyi. That town is not a good place to be trapped.
I'm now in a youth hostel in Teipei and headed out to see the sights. In two days, I'm taking the high speed rail to Tainan. Then around the island as planned.
Later !

Hi Kevin,
Just wanted to say hi!
Have fun and be careful!
Peace,
Tim
That is indeed a bummer, Kevin, but observing a typhoon from a mountaintop might be a bit too exciting. Alison and I once had to outrun a lightning storm from 12,000 feet up Longs Peak, and that really was not very entertaining. So count yourself lucky and focus on some of the local natural history. There must be some venomous crawly things there worth your time.

Kevin, How do you do it? You travel halfway around the world just to be rained out? You have the best luck. Sorry to hear about all the problems you are running into on a "Vacation". Hope that the rest of your trip goes better.
Have Fun!!,
Bill
Danny - I wish you were here to tell me what all these damn birds are. I went to the Chang Kai-Shek residence yesterday. It used to be an experimental botanical garden build by the Japanese while they were in charge of Taiwan (1894-1945). Well, Chang changed it into his residence and it is really amazing. All sorts of flora I've never seen before. And the birds are just incredible - loud as hell. I can't imagine how Chang slept at night.
